Toyota preparing to announce Prius fix next week

Toyota has told dealers it’s preparing a plan to repair the brakes on thousands of hybrid Prius cars in the U.S.

Public awareness of the problem “has prompted considerable customer concern, speculation, and media attention due to the significance of the Prius image,” Carter said in the e-mail. “We want to assure our dealers that we are moving rapidly to provide a solution for your existing customers.

Five new accidents involving Toyota Prius confirmed: report

The Japanese government has confirmed five new accidents involving Toyota Motors Prius hybrids and will urge the troubled car giant to investigate the cases, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Five of them were actual crashes in which the drivers claimed the brakes did not work properly, the daily said, adding that the ministry would urge the company to launch an investigation.

Whaler, activist ship collide again off Antarctica

The anti-whaling ship the Bob Barker and a Japanese harpoon boat collided Saturday in the icy waters off Antarctica - the second major clash this year in the increasingly aggressive confrontations between conservationists and the whaling fleet.

The U.S.-based activist group Sea Shepherd, which sends vessels to confront the Japanese fleet each year, said the Japanese ship deliberately rammed the Bob Barker - named after the U.

Powerful blizzard shuts down US capital

An “extremely dangerous” blizzard expected to dump record amounts of snow swept across much of the eastern United States, closing down the US capital and threatening to trap millions indoors for days.

The storm, dubbed “Snowpocalypse” and “Snowmageddon” by many locals, stretched from Indiana to Pennsylvania and into parts of New York and North Carolina, creating treacherous travel conditions, shutting Washington area airports and leading several states to declare emergencies.
