In another nod to the value of basic science and technology research, President Obama in his weekly radio address today said long-term investments in innovation are needed to ensure the countrys long-term economic growth.
That foundation would be built through innovation, the president said.
The recession is easing, Obama said.

Space shuttle Endeavour and its seven astronauts returned to Earth on Friday, completing a long but successful construction job that boosted the size and power of the international space station.
Endeavour’s smooth and punctual arrival, after more than two weeks in orbit, set off a steady stream of congratulations and an ecstatic welcoming reception for Koichi Wakata, the first Japanese astronaut to return from a long space journey.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and the United Nations are eyeing a former naval shipyard contaminated by radiation, heavy metals and other industrial toxins as the future site of a sprawling new green technology complex and climate change think tank.
The city hopes to start construction on the center in 2011 and open its doors in 2012.

The shuttle Endeavour descended safely to Earth on Friday, ending a successful 16-day assembly mission to the International Space Station with the final piece of Japans Kibo science laboratory.
There were concerns that early morning thunder storms, coastal rain showers and fog near the Florida landing site might force shuttle commander Mark Polanski and his crew to postpone their return until Saturday.

Cyprus on Friday signed a deal with local company DK Windsupply to build one of the largest wind parks in the east Mediterranean, to boost its renewable energy sources, officials said.
The island is hoping to meet EU targets of 13 percent of its energy output coming from renewable sources by 2020. Currently, the figure stands at a lowly two percent.

Consumer spending on video game hardware, software and accessories rose by 19 percent in 2008 over the previous year to $22.

In a starring role for E. coli, researchers have developed a new technique to make movies of bacteria as they infect their victims and are consumed by the hosts immune cells.
“Cells often behave very differently once they have been taken out of their natural environment and cultured in a petri dish,” Will Wood, a researcher at the University of Bath, said in a statement.

Space shuttle Endeavour touched down in Florida on Friday morning, bringing to an end a successful 16-day mission to complete Japans laboratory at the International Space Station .
Returning home with Polansky and Hurley were STS-127 mission specialists Dave Wolf, Tom Marshburn, Chris Cassidy and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette.
