Teens Favor Social Media Over Blogs

The preferred mode of communication, at least among young people, is social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, according to a new survey.

According to the report, only 14 percent of teen Internet users (12 to 17 year olds) in the United States today say they blog, compared to 28 percent in 2006.

Climate change impact of soil underestimated: study

Finnish researchers called for a revision of climate change estimates Monday after their findings showed emissions from soil would contribute more to climate warming than previously thought.

“The error is serious enough to require revisions in climate change estimates,” it said, adding that all climate models used soil emission estimates based on measurements received using an erroneous method.

Space Shuttle Endeavour Soars in Predawn Launch

Endeavour roared into space at 4:14 a.m. EST (0914 GMT) from a seaside pad here at NASAs Kennedy Space Center after a one-day delay due to low clouds. The launch was expected to be the last time a NASA shuttle blasted off at night.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The space shuttle Endeavour lit up the predawn sky above Florida with a false sunrise early Monday as it soared into orbit like a brilliant, artificial star.

US government plans new climate service

US President Barack Obamas administration announced plans Monday for a new office handling climate change, aiming to help businesses chart future plans as the nation shifts to a greener economy.

Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said that the new Climate Service would help businesses on subjects such as wind power by providing data on wind patterns which they would need to expand.

Astronauts Skip Super Bowl for Space Shuttle Launch

The six astronauts who rocketed into space early Monday will have to play football catch-up when they return home in a couple of weeks since they opted to skip watching the Super Bowl in order to blast off on the space shuttle Endeavour.

Because they were preoccupied donning spacesuits and conducting prelaunch checks, the astronauts didnt even get the chance to switch on a TV or radio for an update.

Reports: Toyota plans to recall 300,000 Priuses

Toyota plans to recall about 300,000 Prius hybrids worldwide over a brake problem and is likely to notify both the U.S. and Japanese governments Tuesday, news reports said, as a top executive will testify before U.S. lawmakers about defects that have tarnished its reputation for quality and safety.

Australian Greens question colossal China coal deal

A massive Australian coal export deal with China, seen as boosting the economy and creating jobs, would ultimately result in enormous greenhouse gas emissions, The Greens political party said Sunday.

But Greens Senator Bob Brown said the deal would result in the release of significant carbon pollution into the worlds atmosphere once the coal was shipped to China and burned to create electricity.

Afghan floods, avalanches kill 20: official

At least 20 people have died in floods and avalanches triggered by some of the heaviest rain and snow in Afghanistan for 50 years, an official said Monday.

“So far we have found six bodies from one car. Two cars with 10 other people in them are missing,” he said.

At least six people died and 10 others were missing following heavy rains in the southern province of Kandahar since late Sunday, a provincial spokesman, Zalmai Ayoubi, told AFP.

New federal climate change agency forming

The Obama administration is proposing a new agency to study and report on the changing climate.

Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, planned to announce Monday that NOAA will set up the new Climate Service to operate in tandem with NOAA’s National Weather Service and National Ocean Service.
