‘Killer Electrons’ Get Super-Charged Above Earth

When a shock wave from a solar storm hits the Earths protective magnetic bubble, it creates highly energetic particles dubbed “killer electrons” that can be dangerous to satellites.

Killer electrons this is what the scientists call them are highly energetic charged particles that are trapped in the Earths outer radiation belt, which extends from about 7,500 miles to 40,000 miles (12,000 km to 64,000 km) above our planet.

The nation’s weather

Wet weather was forecast to persist in the Eastern half of the nation Friday as a large low pressure system hovered over the region.

Meanwhile in the West, another low pressure system spinning offshore was forecast to push a cold front over the Pacific Northwest. This system would kick up another round of low level rain and high level snow in the Sierras and Cascades.

25 people killed in Kazakhstan flooding

Heavy rain and melting snow have caused severe floods across a region of Kazakhstan neighboring China, flooding villages and killing around two dozen people, officials said Friday.

A dam at the Kyzyl-Agash reservoir in the eastern Almaty region ruptured Thursday, pouring water into several nearby villages and affecting 3,000 residents, the Emergency Services Ministry said.

Oil Production to Peak in 2014, Scientists Predict

Predicting the end of oil has proven tricky and often controversial, but Kuwaiti scientists now say that global oil production will peak in 2014.

Some have said production already peaked. One earlier model by Swedish researchers suggested that oil would peak sometime between 2008 and 2018. And other researchers have argued there are decades to go before oil production goes into irreversible decline.

Toyota engineer to assist probe of NY Prius crash

Police say Toyota is sending an engineer to help investigate a suburban New York accident in which the driver said her Prius accelerated on its own and slammed into a stone wall.

Toyota has recalled more than 8 million vehicles to address gas pedal problems. The driver in Monday’s accident says she did not know whether the gas pedal got stuck.

Yemen seizes Arab satellite TV gear over southern unrest

Yemeni authorities have seized the transmission gear of Arab satellite news channels over their coverage of deadly unrest in the south of the country.

The seizure was “legal,” with the Sanaa offices of the two channels given advance warning, it said in a statement carried by the official news agency Saba, and the gear would be returned to their head offices.

Life-Enabling Molecules Spotted in Orion Nebula

The chemical fingerprints of potentially life-building molecules have been detected in the Orion nebula by Europes Herschel Space Observatory.

Researchers have used one of Herschels instruments, which looks at the cosmos in the far infrared wavelengths of light, to provide more insight into how organic molecules form in space.

Experts say US doctors overtesting, overtreating
